Background Discussion: AI and the Future of Journalism

AI overviews and other AI-driven features are becoming the new front door to news. Narrowing results to a handful of sources, limiting clarity on the quality of those sources, misrepresenting content, and reducing traffic that makes independent journalism financially viable - in short, threatening the model of a healthy and accountable digital public sphere. 

For journalism, this means a deeper shift than declining clicks: AI systems are mediating what people know and believe, the decisions they make, and their ability to access trustworthy information on the issues that matter most to them.   

As media outlets face a new phase of dependence on AI-driven access to information, we should ask: How does AI shape people’s interaction with news and information? And what can policymakers and news publishers do to preserve a trustworthy and economically viable information ecosystem in the age of AI?
