Germany’s intelligence agencies are asking for more powers, more data, and more AI. The scrutiny they are getting in return is minimal. In a new op-ed for netzpolitik.org, Corbinian Ruckerbauer argues that this year’s public hearing of the German Parliamentary Oversight Committee shows how far the debate on intelligence reform has drifted from questions of fundamental rights and democratic accountability. As agencies push for broader data access and AI- and algorithm-based surveillance, oversight bodies must keep pace. Critical and constructive questions, genuine debate, and transparency will ensure technology serves democracy, not the other way around.
